SRP earns prestigious Freedom Award

Recognition from Department of Defense

The Department of Defense today named SRP one of just 15 employers in the nation to receive the prestigious Employer Support Freedom Award.

The award, instituted in 1996, is the highest recognition given by the U.S. government to employers for their support of their employees who serve in the National Guard and Reserve.

More than 3,000 nominations were received for the 2017 selection process. According to the Department of Defense, this year’s winners — including SRP — “have gone above and beyond” in support of their military employees.

“SRP is honored to support the amazing men and women who selflessly defend our nation through their service in the Guard and Reserve, and we are grateful to be Arizona’s recipient,” said Michael O’Connor, SRP’s Associate General Manager and Chief Legal Executive. “We are blessed to see the extraordinary dedication, patriotism, and bravery of these individuals every day, and we will always remain committed to ensuring they have every opportunity to succeed here at home.”

Employee Adam Douglas, who also serves in the Arizona Army National Guard and had nominated SRP for the award, said that from his personal experience, SRP not only provides financial support when he’s participating in weekend drills, annual training, and extended training courses, but also the stability and security in knowing that “my job is protected while I am serving my country.”

He added: “I am proud to work for an employer that is committed to its employees, community and country.”

Over the last few years, SRP has implemented a broad veterans initiative to provide jobs for service members and veterans at SRP. Part of these efforts is a special website,, which uses a job skills translator tool to help veterans figure out how their education and experience in the military can apply to jobs at SRP.

SRP also has an Employee Interest Group called SRPVETS, whose aim is to promote the understanding of military and service culture. SRP also supports employees who serve on nonprofit boards of local veteran organizations, and assist groups such as Veterans First that help struggling veterans.

SRP will join other companies receiving the award this year, including Johnson & Johnson, NBC Universal and Cargill, at an awards banquet in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 25.

More details and a complete list of winners are on the award website.
