Rainwater harvesting system helps garden, community

A rainwater harvesting system at Escalante Community Garden in Tempe is not only supporting the sustainable growth of the garden but is also growing the self-sufficiency of the community, in part thanks to SRP.

Tony Perez, a Sustainability Program Strategist at SRP, along with a team of volunteers installed the system as part of a service project to celebrate the Arizona State University School of Sustainability’s 10th anniversary.

Wildfires impact us all

How you can help promote forest health

Just as firefighters managed to contain the Tenderfoot wildfire near Yarnell in northwest Arizona this month, the focus has turned to the growing Cedar Creek wildfire in Eastern Arizona.

This latest wildfire is raging near Show Low area, prompting evacuations in the small community of Forestdale, and preparations for the same in the surrounding communities, including Pinetop-Lakeside.

Many Valley dwellers don’t realize how much of a direct impact wildfires can have on them – from the air we breathe to the water we drink. Experts say they believe the Tenderfoot wildfire was human-caused.

Memorial Day weekend for many in Arizona means heading to a lake for a day out on the boat. Prep work involved? Snacks, sunscreen and taking along good company.

There’s one more thing you may not be aware of but need to keep in mind. Quagga mussels, a highly invasive species, can spread from one place to another on boats, and thus damage not only watercrafts by ruining motors, but also hurt lake ecosystems and water systems. They are now reported to have spread in Canyon, Apache and Saguaro lakes.
